March 11, 2011 As you have heard by now, Japan has experienced a devastating tsunami that was the result of an 8.9 magnitude offshore quake. The tsunami came ashore with a tidal surge as high as 23 feet, destroying virtually everything in its path. The number of dead and missing will likely reach into the thousands. It is the largest tsunami to hit Japan in recorded history. I ask each of you to take a moment and pray for the nation of Japan, the survivors, and for those who now grieve the loss of a loved one. Pray for the people on the ground battling for their lives, for the rescue efforts happening even now and for the government of Japan as they work to bring relief. Also pray that God would be glorified through this difficult moment and that His redemption work would be evident through the hands, feet and hearts of those who are called to serve them. On Sunday we will be praying for this situation and for the people who for years will struggle to put their lives back together. [On a more personal note, I attended seminary with Jeff Diffie who travelled each year from Tokyo to Wilmore, KY to attend classes. Jeff worked for the Army outside Tokyo. I have not yet heard from Jeff.] God of love, be with our brothers and sisters in Japan as they cope with this earthquake, God of peace, calm the hearts of those who live in terror of more aftershocks and tsunami, God of hope, comfort those who now grieve and those still waiting for news, God of all, remind us of our human frailty in an unpredictable world, God of the Church, inspire us, your people, to offer our love and compassion in a way that brings healing and hope.
