However, you feel about C S Lewis, or Christianity for that matter, I believe that everyone should read The Screwtape Letters at least once before they die.  These letters in which a demon instructs his nephew on how to damn a soul contain some of the smartest writing on human nature I’ve ever come across, and one of the quotes that stuck with me the most is when Screwtape announces rather triumphantly about the souls that arrive in Hell and bemoan, “I see now that I did neither what I ought nor what I liked."  They have wasted both the life they were given and the eternity they were offered.  You see, says Screwtape, it isn’t necessary to tempt humans with the tremendous fun of outrageous sinfulness to get them in hell anymore.  All you have to do is twist human guilt so that it’s prompting them to do things that they feel like they should (guilt), but don’t actually consist in doing actual Good (intention), like working extra hours to get 'ahead' so you can 'live the good life' all the while sacrificing their children's love, violating your marriage vows and destroying your own health.  They’re not doing anything that’s going to get them into heaven, but neither are they doing things that they actually enjoy doing that's keeping them out of it. This is the ultimate win for evil. There are, however, signs and symptoms that will tell you you have been infected and are living out a life you neither want or were created to live. For many of us it is an addictive behaviour we've grown accustomed to living. That's just the way things are and besides everyone's doing it. http://www.slideshare.net/steve4040/recognize-the-signs-and-symptoms-of-spiritual-temptation
