annunciation When we think about the purpose of Christmas we often fall back on classic hymns, but they can often be misleading. Consider "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" God rest ye merry, gentlemen Let nothing you dismay Remember, Christ, our Saviour Was born on Christmas day To save us all from Satan's power When we were gone astray O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy O tidings of comfort and joy. According to this hymn, Jesus came to save us all from Satan's power. Sounds pretty good, but it kind of makes us all passive observers of the event rather than participants in it. Mary's story, however, is radically different. Her whole life is engaged in this event, her security, good name, her future and even her ability to find love. We like Christmas because it makes us warm and cozy knowing that God came near, when in fact Christmas should makes us extremely uncomfortable. When God comes near, He often asks us to be engaged at a much deeper level than we ever imagined. Are you ready for an unqualified Yes?
